Are you curious about the difference between “읽은” and “읽는”? Before we find out, let me explain “verb + 는/(으)ㄴ”
‘-는’ is a noun-modifier. It is attached to the stem of an action verb and serves to modify its following noun. The action occurs in the present or occurs regularly or repeatedly.
ex) 저기 커피 마시는 사람이 누구에요?
여기는 제가 자주 다니는 길이에요.
<Practice> Make sentence with following words and phrases
ex) 송편, 추석에 먹다, 음식 ⇒ 송편은 추석에 먹는 음식입니다.
<Answer>
‘(으)ㄴ’ is a noun-modifier for past tense action verbs; that is, the action occurred in the past or is completed. It is attached to the stem of an action verb and serves to modify its following noun.
ex) 어제 본 영화는 정말 재밌었어요.
After a consonant-ending action verb, ‘-은’ is attached. After a vowel-ending action verb, ‘-ㄴ’ is attached.
ex) 마시다 + ㄴ = 마신
받다 + 은 = 받은
<Practice> 예시와 같이 문장을 완성하세요.
예시)어제 친구를 만났어요. 그 친구는 한국에서 왔어요.
⇒어제 한국에서 온 친구를 만났어요.
<Answer>
읽는 = 읽다 + 는 : the action occurs in present
ex) 저기 책을 읽는 사람이 제 동생이에요.
읽은 = 읽다 + 은 : past tense action verbs
ex) 제가 저번 주에 읽은 책을 빌려드릴까요?
