Hello all : D Today, I will introduce Tongin Market in Northern part of Seoul.
There are tons of foods you can just see, eat, enjoy. Plus, there is one thing special than other market. so you should know Tongin Market as Traditional market before you go !!!!
Tongin Market dates back to June 1941, as a public market set up for Japanese residents near the Hyoja-dong neighborhood when Korea was still under Japanese colony. After the Korean war the nation experienced a swift rise in population, which led to a natural increase in consumption and demand. As a result the area’s street vendors and stores used the former Tongin Market area as their marketplace. Now, Tongin Market consists of 75 stores, most of which are restaurants and grocery stores. There are also some shops selling manufactured goods like underwear and shoes.
There is very unique system than any other market, which is Token Lunch box !!!
First, you go to Information center in 2nd floor, then exchange money or card to get Token and empty Lunch box like this,
Which is very special. isn’t it ?????
An One(1) Token worth $ 0.5, so if you have the ten(10) Token then you would be full enough.
With Token, you visit most restaurant with this sign.
and then pick foods then put food into empty Lunch box one by one like this.
Ta-da~ what a delicious food ^^. It just costs under $5. If you need really cost effective food, visit here and enjoy with just $5.
Very variety of foods selling in Tongin Market. you can eat Sundae bokkeum(Korean sausage), Fried chicken with sweat sauce, fried rice cake and skewered foods(fried pork, shrimp, chicken), Korean sweat rice drink etc. I can’t count how many foods they are selling. Unluckily No English sign 🙁
Those food make your mouth water ????? Each food costs under $ 0.5. so just visit and give Token to them and enjoy your food !!
Two foods are special here, which is Pan fried rice cake and Mayak Gimbap(Drug Gimbap) ! Actually Tongin Market is well-known as the best place in Korea for Pan fried rice cake, and even foreign tourists come to have a taste. It is made by stir-frying rice cakes in oil and spicy seasonings.
It looks simple, but when you sip it, you can have a unique taste. Let`s try it !!!
The other one is Mayak Gimbab(Drug Gimbap). it is just like small Gimbap, but when it comes with a sweat and tangy hot mustard sauce, it could be very special food, which is Mayak Gimbap.
Actually, It’s a specialty of Gwangjang market(that will be introduced next time)…. Anyway give Mayak Gimbap a shot !!
